The reading and listening discuss about how to control the population of tamarisk trees. The reading points out three ways to curtail the population of tamarisk trees. Whereas, the professor totally refutes the three points presented in the passage.
Firstly, the professor rebuts the reading’s first method of using burning. He points out that Tamarisk tress will be burned down; however these trees’ seeds will still be spread into the river and flow to someplace where they can establish their population.
According to the reading material, planting native trees can be another effective way to decrease tamarisk trees. The professor mentions that Tamarisk will salinize the soil, which makes the soil unsuitable for native trees to grow. Thus the native trees are unable to thrive quickly enough to block sunlight necessary for the growth of tamarisk.
